OBJECTIVE

  • Students will have a chance to have an orientation based on their abilities and their feedback from the teacher.

GUIDELINE

  • This progress test will not say that they PASS or FAIL, but simply show the students their improvements and the feedback from the teacher. Therefore, we will have a scoring system to reflect their abilities.
  • Before the test, teachers will inform the students the reason of the test and also how we operate the test (as below).
  • The progress test's primary purpose is not to clarify whether you are failing or passing, but for supporting you to review your learning. Through the result of the test, the teacher will give you advice relating to your improvement, your strengths, and weakness, and guide you on how to work on your issues to study effectively.
  • This first day of the progress test is a demo session. Hence, if there are some mistakes relating to the procedure and operation of the test, please sympathize with us because of these shortcomings. Also, we would love to receive your contribution feedbacks to improve to organize a professional test for everyone.
  • The test has 2 sections:

In section 2, two students will receive a list of questions in different topics. The teacher will remind them:
⇨ “Now, [Student A] will choose 3 random questions to ask [student B]”.
⇨ “You will score 50 pts for this section”.

SECTION 2: QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

In section 1, students will be given 1 cue card. The teacher will remind them:
⇨ “You will have 1 minute to prepare for your talk”.
⇨ “You have to use at least 5 new words that you just learned in this level”.
⇨ “After 1 minute, 2 students will be asked to come. Student A will talk about the topic (s)he receives to student B. Student B will listen and after student A has finished, student B will talk”.
⇨ “You will score 50 pts for this section”.

SECTION 1: MONOLOG

  • After 2 students have finished, the teacher will give each of them the evaluation for each section. Explain why and also say what they need to improve according to the score/evaluation.

HOW TO EVALUATE?

VOCABULARY

  • Students finish their talk with 5 new words and above: score 25 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with 4 new words: score 20 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with 3 new words: score 15 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with 2 new words: score 10 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with 1 new words: score 5 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with no new words: score 0 pts.

GRAMMAR

  • Students speak fluently with almost no grammar mistakes: Score 8-9 pts.
  • Students speak with some grammar mistakes but the examiner can generally understand: Score 6-7 pts.
  • Students speak with plenty of grammar mistakes but the examiner can generally understand: Score 4-5 pts.
  • Students speak with plenty of grammar mistakes but the examiner can find it hard to understand: Score 2-3 pts.
  • Students have a very basic talk and pause lengthily before most words: Score 0-1.
  • Students speak fluently with almost no grammar mistakes and are able to apply special structures properly: Score 10 pts.

PRONUNCIATION

  • Students finish their talk with full range of correct and proper pronunciation features: score 15 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with different pronunciation features but fail to maintain it throughout their talk: score 12 - 14 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with some pronunciation mistakes but the examiner can mainly understand: score 9 - 11 pts/
  • Students finish their talk with plenty pronunciation mistakes but the examiner can understand: score 6 - 8 pts.
  • Students finish their talk with plenty pronunciation mistakes but the examiner finds it hard to understand: 3 - 5 pts.
  • The examiner can understand almost nothing because of pronunciation: 0 – 2 pts.

Scored 45-50
Can book Level Test.

TEST RESULT

Scored 35-45: Stay at the current level at least 1 month and focus on your study by:
- Applying new vocabularies that you have learnt into your practice.
- Practicing pronunciation, grammar
- Reading the text book before comimg to class.

Scored > 35: Stay at the current level at least 3 months and focus on your study by:
- Applying new vocabularies that you have learnt into your practice.
- Practicing pronunciation, grammar
- Reading the text book before comimg to class.

WHY WE OPERATE LIKE THIS?

2 students’ talk will reduce the waiting time for the other students in class.
Teachers can have more time listening to students & note down their feedback.
2 students’ talk will also make students less nervous when it comes to tests and exams.
